Aguas de Cristal ran her rivals off their feet in her career debut, winning a maiden special weight event at Monmouth Park on June 16 by a dominating 4 ½ lengths, becoming the first winner for her Grade 1-winning sire Volatile.
Ridden by Jairo Rendon, Aguas de Cristal flashed good early speed away from the starting gate in the five-furlong event. She stalked the early pace, took over in upper stretch, and pulled away impressively late to score in :58.82 for owner Strike Stable and trainer Jorge Delgado.
Bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Aguas de Cristal is produced from the stakes-placed Bayern mare Cedar Hall. The gray or roan filly, who hails from the female family of Grade 1 winners Touusad and Indygo Shiner, was a $75,000 graduate of the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Volatile was a Grade 1 winner and stakes record setter who captured the 2020 A.G. Vanderbilt S. (G1) at Saratoga against a field comprised of all Grade 1 winners. In the Aristides S. at Churchill Downs in his prior start, Volatile set a new stakes record. In winning the six-furlong Aristides by a commanding five lengths, he stopped the clock in 1:07.57, just missing the 2007 track record of 1:07.55. All told, Volatile won five of six career starts, banking $341,040.
By Violence out of the stakes-winning Unbridled’s Song mare Melody Lady, Volatile was an $850,000 Keeneland September graduate in 2017 and was his sire’s most expensive yearling sold at public auction that year. Volatile stands for $15,000 S&N.
