With an electrifying stretch run, Ami’s Mesa took the $144,900 Glorious Song S. at Woodbine, giving her sire Sky Mesa his second stakes winner on the day, joining Sky Flight, who took the $100,000 Artie Schiller S. at Belmont Park.
Ami’s Mesa, who was named a TDN Rising Star following an eight-length maiden score Oct. 12 at Woodbine, was made the favorite for the seven furlong Glorious Song. After breaking somewhat slow, Ami’s Mesa found herself about a half-dozen lengths off the lead after a quarter-mile that went in :23.48.
Bottled up between horses around the turn, Luis Contreras finally swung the dark bay filly five wide into the stretch for some clear space. Ami’s Mesa found her best stride inside the final furlong, rolling past five horses to win full of urn in 1:23.43 on the Polytrack.
“I certainly had some anxious moments. She didn’t break well at all,” said winning owner/breeder Ivan Dalos. “I wasn’t sure she was going to get there, but she has an (awfully good) finishing kick. She did it.”
Ami’s Mesa collected $108,545 for the win and is perfect in two starts. The daughter of stakes winner Victorious Ami is a half-sister to Ami’s Holiday, winner of the Grey S. (G3).
