Dimatic rallied to win the $300,000 Zia Park Derby by a half-length on Nov. 26 to become Gun Runner’s 15th stakes winner of the year and his 35th of his lifetime.
Dimatic, who placed in both the West Virginia Derby (G3) and Texas Derby this year, was away evenly in Tuesday’s 1 1/16-mile contest and settled behind the leaders going into the first turn. He sat behind a quick half-mile of :46.23 before advancing going into the final turn. With a wall of horses in front of him, Dimatic waited for an opportunity, and when a hole opened in upper stretch, he came through to take the lead, then hold off Indispensable to stop the timer in a track-record 1:41.69.
Owned by his breeder Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC, Dimatic is 3-2-1 in 12 starts and has earned $614,403.
