Red Mountain found his best stride in the final furlong of the Jim Thorpe S. Dec. 13 at Remington Park to become the newest stakes winner for Sky Mesa.
The chestnut 3-year-old is his sire’s 79th lifetime stakes winner and was making his added-money debut in Friday night’s one-mile contest.
Red Mountain, under Stewart Elliott, got a good rail-skimming trip most of the way as he sat a few lengths off the pace. Turning for home, he was still bottled up behind horses before Elliott switched him to the outside with a furlong to go. Red Mountain surged past Mind Bolt and Flat Hanby to win by a length in a driving finish.
The winner is owned, bred and trained by Steve Martin. Red Mountain is one of three foals, all winners, out of four-time stakes winner Deputy’s Whirl.
