Thundering Sky overcame obstacles on both turns and in the stretch of Saturday’s De La Rose S. to come away a half-length winner in a very eventful race.
The 4-year-old Sky Mesa filly now has two stakes wins to her credit and is an even 3-3-3 in 15 starts, with earnings of $316,790. Thundering Sky’s dam, Uninhibited Song, was also a two-time stakes winner.
Thundering Sky broke well from her inside post, but got wrangled back going into the first turn. Rajiv Maragh had her in a good spot down the backstretch, but encountered more trouble when stuck behind slowing horses with less than three furlongs to go.
Coming into the stretch, Maragh found a narrow opening, and Thundering Sky bravely shot through, ultimately besting On Leave by a neck, with five horses finishing within a length of the win.
For Sky Mesa, he recently earned his 60th lifetime black type winner when Ami’s Mesa took the Ontario Colleen (G3) on July 22. In 2017, he has 15 stakes horses and 66 world wide winners.
