Lady Azteca found an opening on the inside in upper stretch en route her one-length maiden win on Aug. 17 at Colonial Downs in the first two-turn race for the 2-year-old Sharp Azteca filly (WATCH RACE).
Sharp Azteca now has 17 individual winners, which is six more than any other First-Crop Sire of 2022.
Lady Azteca was covered up behind horses for most of Wednesday’s one-mile trip. Longshot Air One was loose on the early lead, then began to back up around the final turn. That caused Lady Azteca to have to wait for an opening to make her move. When one appeared in upper stretch, she responded immediately and finished very well to get the win.
Lady Azteca is owned by her breeder Gelfenstein Farm.
Among Sharp Azteca’s superlative first crop are the undefeated duo of Sharp Aza Tack, winner of the Tyro S., and Tyler’s Tribe, a two-time stakes winner with three victories by a combined 38 lengths.
