Ami’s Mesa became the latest graded stakes winner for Sky Mesa on July 22 when she rallied strongly in the stretch to claim a one-length victory in the $146,150 Ontario Matron S. (G3) at Woodbine.

Ami’s Mesa is Sky Mesa 60th lifetime stakes winner in North America and one of his six stakes winners this year.

Breaking from post six, Ami’s Mesa hustled to take up a good spot in the clear a few lengths off the lead going around the first turn. Running comfortably in that spot through six furlongs, Luis Contreras urged his mount on before entering the stretch.

Ami’s Mesa responded with a fleet turn of foot, running down and past Ice Festival in the final furlong to get the 1 1/16-miles in a swift 1:43.44.

“We knew she had the speed because she’s sprinted before,” said owner/breeder Ivan Dalos. “It was more a question whether she would go a mile and a sixteenth. Coming out of a Victory Gallop (mare), I knew that the breeding was there. It was a question of whether she inherited the right genes and she did.”

With the win, Ami’s Mesa is now 4-1-0 in seven starts, including a win in the Glorious Song S. in 2015 as a 2-year-old. Her earnings stand at $219,704.
