Disarm, making his first start since finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby (G1), rallied past Verifying in deep stretch to take the $400,000 Matt Winn S. (G3) June 11 over the sloppy going at Ellis Park.
Disarm, who was one of four horses in the Winn to run in the Derby, was bottled up in third for much of the 1 1/8-mile trip, finally found running room in upper stretch. Switching from inside to out, he ran down Verifying in the final strides to win by a half-length in 1:49.59 for the 1 1/8-miles.
“It was a little wet today which is always concerning to see how horses would like it,” jockey Joel Rosario said after the race. “(Disarm) seemed to like it and got over the track well. It was a very good performance.”
Trained by Steve Asmussen for breeder Winchell Thoroughbreds, Disarm has put together an impressive 3-year-old resume that includes a second in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and a third in the Lexington S. (G3) before his solid Derby effort. His overall record is 2-2-2 from seven starts, with earnings of $720,200.
Disarm is one of eight stakes winners this year for Gun Runner, who leads the Third-Crop sire list and is fifth on the General Sire list.
