Sky Mesa got his 11th stakes winner of 2014 on Sunday when Floral Sky battled to a dead-heat victory in the $50,000 Scarlet and Gray H. at Thistledown in northern Ohio (VIDEO).
Floral Sky looked to have too much to overcome when she was last of 11 after a quarter mile. But Jason Lumpkins took the 4-year-old to the outside, circling horses on the turn, then closed throughout the stretch to collar Crafty Blue Kat on the wire.
The winner is the second foal out of Floral Park, who has also produced four-time stakes winner Dougs Buddy. Bred by Langsem Farm, Floral Sky sold for $230,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
In addition to his 11 stakes winners, Sky Mesa leads all sires with six 2-year-old stakes horses, led by Best Pal S. (G2) winner Skyway and Mexican Grade 1 winner Cus Cus. He has 24 total stakes horses this year, and worldwide earners of $4,500,000.
