Gun Runner’s outstanding 2017 campaign earned the now 5-year-old Eclipse Awards as both Horse of the Year and Champion Older Male during the Jan. 25 ceremony at Gulfstream Park.

Co-owners Goncalo Torrealba of Three Chimneys and Ron Winchell accepted both awards on behalf of their champion, his trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Florent Geroux

Winchell reflected on keeping Gun Runner in training following his 3-year-old season.

“Gun Runner is simply irreplacable in our racing stable. We kept him in training with the hopes of earning an Eclipse Award,” Winchell said after Gun Runner was named Champion Older Male.

Gun Runner’s season, which culminated with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in early November, has been well-documented. The son of Candy Ride (ARG) will try to go out a winner when he finishes career in Saturday’s $16 million Pegasus Inv. (G1) at Gulfstream.

Following that race, he will enter stud at Three Chimneys, where he will stand for $70,000 live foal, stands and nurses.
