Beguine topped a terrific month of July for Gun Runner with her gate-to-wire victory in the $100,000 Alma North S. July 29 at Laurel Park.
The 4-year-old filly is the fourth stakes winner this month for her sire, who is dominating the 2023 Third-Crop sire list with more than $9.2 million in progeny earnings, $2.6 million clear of his closest pursuer.
Beguine, who was stakes-placed twice prior to Sunday, shot straight to the lead in the 6 ½-furlong Alma North and was up by 1 ½-lengths in the first quarter mile. She laid down a solid half-mile of :45.52 and continued very strong in the stretch to win by 2 ¾-lengths in 1:15.83 on a fast track.
Beguine, a 4-year-old homebred owned by Charles Matses, is 3-3-1 in 11 starts and has earned $348,303. She was second in last year’s Fantasy S. (G2) and Garland of Roses S.
