Recharge was challenged the entire 1 1/16-mile trip of Saturday’s $300,000 Houston Ladies Classic S. (G3) and came away with a well-deserved neck victory in the race for older fillies and mares.
The 4-year-old, who won the Sunland Park Oaks last term, got away on top from her inside post, but was immediately confronted by multiple stakes winner Hoosier Philly. That duo took turns on the lead all the way until the final furlong, when Recharge began to edge clear. Alpine Princess made a late charge, but could not get to the winner, who finished in 1:45.33 on a fast track.
“She ran a beautiful race,” said winning trainer Steve Asmussen. “She really stepped up and is now six for eight in her lifetime. So much credit goes to Winchell Thoroughbreds for her truly amazing pedigree. I couldn’t have been happier with Ben Curtis’ ride; he is a true professional and rode her confidently.”
Recharge is out of Winchell’s stellar racehorse and broodmare Remit, who is a full sister to multiple graded stakes winner and sire Tapiture. Remit’s foals include Finite, a three-time graded stakes winner, and two-time stakes winner Reride.
Recharge is Gun Runner’s third stakes winner of the new year. His Grade 1-winning colt Locked was second in yesterday’s $3 million Pegasus World Cup Inv. (G1).
