Long known as a leading 2-year-old sire, Sky Mesa has a pair of juveniles in action during Friday’s Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita Park.
First up in the $1 million Juvenile Turf (G1), race 6 at 1:52 p.m. PT, is Proven Strategies, who drew post 11 in the full field of 14 2-year-old negotiating the mile on the grass. Though still a maiden Proven Strategies has never been beaten more than two lengths in his two stakes starts, most recently the Summer S. (G1) at Woodbine.
Once race late is the dynamic Perfect Alibi in the $2 million Juvenile Fillies (G1), race 7 at 2:32 p.m. PT. Perfect Alibi has never been worse than second in five starts, with wins in the Spinaway S. (G1) and Adirondack S. (G2) among her three victories. A $220,000 yearling purchase, the dark bay has earned $460,988 for Tracy Farmer.
Perfect Alibi drew post three in the nine-horse field and will be ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., who also was aboard for both her stakes wins.
Sky Mesa has accounted for eight stakes winners and 10 stakes wins, with progeny earnings of $4.7 million to date, all surpassing his 2018 year-end totals.
