Recharge bested Candy Aisle by a neck in Sunday’s $250,000 Sunland Park Oaks to complete a 1-2 finish for the two Gun Runner fillies.
Recharge earned 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks for the win, while Candy Aisle picked up 10 points for her effort.
The 3-year-olds used different tactics to get to the finish on nearly even terms. Recharge set the pace from the outset and led by a length through the first six furlongs. Candy Aisle, meanwhile, was last of five until launching her bid on the far turn. The two were in very close contention for the final furlong, with Recharge just getting the best of it. The remainder of the field were four lengths behind.
Recharge, a Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC homebred, is undefeated in three starts and has earned $189, 498. Sunday’s win was her first stakes start.
Recharge is a half-sister to multiple graded winner Finite and multiple stakes winner Reride. Her dam Remit was a two-time stakes winner herself, and is a full sister to five-time graded winner and current sire Tapiture.
Gun Runner had a terrific weekend that also saw his 3-year-old colt Sierra Leone win the Risen Star S. (G2). With seven black type horses already in 2024, Gun Runner leads the Fourth-Crop Sire list.
