One day after Sky Mesa’s Sky Treasure captured the Nassau S. (G2), Ol’ Fashion Gal battled to a head victory in Sunday’s $154,800 Grade 3 Selene S., also at Woodbine, to give Sky Mesa a graded stakes double.
The Selene was also Ol’ Fashion Gal’s synthetic surface debut; she broke her maiden and won the Jimmy Durante S., both over Del Mar’s turf course, in 2014.
The Selene outcome wasn’t determined until the final strides. After breaking well and settling into the second spot behind Watch This Cat, Ol’ Fashion Gal came to battle for the lead at the top of the stretch. After putting away the pacesetter, the winner repelled a late challenge by Grade 3 winner Don’t Leave Me to win by a head.
The final time for the 1 1/16-miles in 1:44.73.
“She broke well and I wanted to be close to the pace,” said winning rider Alan Garcia of the 3-year-old filly. “It worked out good, my filly was trying all the way.”
Ol’ Fashion Gal, bred in Kentucky by John C. Oxley and owned by Bill and Vicki Poston, banked $90,000 while improving her record to three wins from six starts. The winner is out of the Horse Chestnut mare Little Hussy and is a half-sister to the stakes winner Spirited Miss.
