Sixtythreecaliber earned her first stakes win on Saturday evening at Churchill Downs when the 3-year-old Gun Runner filly prevailed by a neck the $160,000 Seneca S. (WATCH RACE).
Despite a three-wide trip around both turns in the 1 1/16-mile contest, Sixtythreecaliber was able to wear down Falconet in the final strides and get the hard-earned win. The winner was third for most of the race and looked like she might not get the win with a furlong to go. But a determined effort in the final sixteenth gave her the win in 1:44.22 on the fast track.
“Horses sometimes get in a groove during races and sometimes it works out,” said trainer Tom Amoss. “All credit goes to Edgar Morales who is so good at positioning these type of horses. He did a great job and our filly never showed any quit.”
Sixtythreecaliber, whose lone prior stakes start was a fourth in the Indiana Oaks (G3), has now earned $173,282 with four wins from six starts. She is owned by MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm LLC.
Bred by Lee Pokoik and out of Classofsixtythree, Sixtythreecaliber is a half-sister to Sham S. (G3) Gunmetal Gray. The bay filly sold to her owners for $250,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
Gun Runner’s astonishing list of other stakes winners on Saturday include Taiba in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), Society in the Cotillion (G1), Echo Zulu in the Dogwood S. (G3), and Gunite in the Harrods Creek S.
