Glen Hill Farm’s homebred Family Meeting ended unlucky stakes dry spell with a rousing victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf S. at Gulfstream Park.
In winning the 1 1/16-mile contest by a neck, Family Meeting wore down Frosty Friday in the stretch to secure the win in 1:43.18 over the firm turf.
“I didn’t want to be too close early. She broke good,” jockey Jose Lezcano said. “When I asked her, I let her pick it up, little by little, on the backside, and then basically she went on to win the race. I felt like there was a lot of horse under me.”
The 4-year-old daughter of Sky Mesa garnered her first stakes win since the Jimmy Durante S. (G3) in late 2015, but had placed in three added-money starts since then. With Saturday’s win, she improved her record to 3-3-1 in 11 starts and has earned $223,760.
A product of six generations of breeding by Glen Hill, Family Meeting was the first foal out of Family Plan, who is a sister to the likes of Graded Stakes winners Closeout and Capital Request.
Family Meeting is Sky Mesa’s first stakes winner of 2017. The Three Chimneys stallion was responsible for 105 winners and 11 stakes winners last year and has 100 lifetime black type horses. He is standing this year for a fee of $15,000 stands and nurses.
