South Andros scored a come-from-behind victory in the $50,000 Justakiss S. Thursday at Delaware Park to give Sky Mesa his fifth stakes winner of 2014. The victory was also the first black-type win for the 3-year-old filly, who has hit the board in 10 of 15 lifetime starts, earning $161,500.
Sky Mesa has had seven winners over the past week, including a pair of maiden special weights at Churchill Downs and Woodbine. Sky Mesa is the leading 2-year-old sire of 2014, with four winners from just six starters, he is the only sire with more than $100,000 in juvenile earnings.
In the 1 1/16-mile Justakiss, South Andros got away last in the field of six, but moved up four wide on the far turn to get herself into contention. Xavier Perez took his mount down the middle of the track in the stretch, collaring She’s Not Lazy in the final sixteenth to win by a length in 1:45.50.
Bred in Virginia by Chance Farm, South Andros is a half-sister to Firecracker S. winner Lunar Mist. South Andros races in the name of her breeder in partnership with Hillwood Stable LLC.
