Top-five First-Crop sire Sharp Azetca got his third winner of the week and sixth overall on June 26 when Starteca was a gallant winner of a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight race at Lone Star Park (WATCH RACE).
With his half-dozen winners, Sharp Azteca is second only to Bolt d’Oro among his fellow First-Crop sires. Offering excellent value at $5,000 S&N, Sharp Azteca is the only Kentucky-based sire in the top 10 on the list who stands for under $7,500.
Starteca was away from the gate very fast and got into a duel for the lead with Phunk. After losing some ground while wide on the turn and into the stretch, the bay filly righted herself and surged past Phunk in the final furlong, then held off Guitar Groupie to win by a nose.
The winner is owned by Kat Kirk and Wayne Sanders and was bred by Eric and Randi Moreau-Sipiere.
