Volatile’s first-crop filly Reliable Source made an auspicious career debut for trainer Steve Asmussen on July 28, winning a $100,000 maiden special weight at Saratoga to become her sire’s sixth winner overall and his second at Saratoga. Volatile’s 2-year-old colt Incentive Pay broke his maiden at first asking for trainer Chad Brown and owner Klaravich Stables on July 20.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, Reliable Source went to the front at the start of the 6 ½-furlong fixture. The gray or roan filly set all the pace under pressure from both sides. She shook clear of her rivals outside of the sixteenth-pole and prevailed by a widening 2 ½ lengths in the end.

Owned and bred by Three Chimneys Farm, Reliable Source is produced from the Broken Vow mare Repeta. The mare has already produced stakes winner Funtastic Again (by Funtastic), who finished second in the Shoemaker Mile S. (G1) at Santa Anita in May.

“Three Chimneys loves that mare (Repeta) and loves that sire,” Three Chimneys vice chairman Doug Cauthen told the TDN following Reliable Source’s sparkling debut. “We are always hoping for the best for these new runners. She did her job and then some. She was very game.”

Asmussen added of the filly in the TDN article, “That’s what we are in the game for. The whole team has a lot of confidence in this sire, especially because he has put out individuals that look like she does. She is going to be a wonderful filly and we are fortunate to have her.”

Volatile, who was also trained by Asmussen, won the Alfred G. Vanderbilt S. (G1) at Saratoga in his final career start in 2020. Three Chimneys owned Volatile in partnership with Phoenix Thoroughbred III during his racing career.

“He was so brilliant and a very good-looking horse,” Cauthen shared with TDN. “He was brilliantly fast.”

Volatile, a son of Violence, is currently a Top Five First-Crop Sire with progeny earnings of $306,688.
